About Us
The purpose of the philosophy students’ association is to encourage the formation of a philosophic community on campus. One of our aims is to collectively pursue a classical education as students of philosophy.
Our method is to engage with the classical arts available to us, because the arts inflame the passions, which inspire a curiosity about truth, which lead to the pursuit of philosophy.
Organizing workshops where we learn how to interpret the classical arts
“Field trips” to arts venues (opera, ballet, WSO, theatre, WAG…)
Screenings of plays, operas, etc. (Shakespeare Club, Philosophy documentaries)
We also intend to engage directly with philosophy by organizing language clubs, study groups, book clubs, student symposiums and debate nights.
Language clubs: Texts should be read in the original language. Language clubs, particularly for difficult and obscure languages such as Greek and Latin, maintain a fun environment and encourage students to continue perfecting what they have learned.
Study groups: Help students connect to share notes and other resources, tutor one another, and study more effectively.
Book clubs: Organize small groups according to interests in reading topics/literature.
Symposiums: Students can present papers, philosophic speeches, memorized poems, etc.
Debate: The purpose of philosophic debate is to pursue truth and refine argumentation skills. Differs from traditional debate in no one is seeking to “win” the argument.
Community Development: Retreats, soccer matches, picnics.
Long term goal: philosophic community outreach: Organize university students to tutor inner-city kids in the rudiments of a classical education. THIS WILL RESULT IN MORE PHILOSOPHY STUDENTS DOWN THE ROAD!
